Travel tips for Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka enjoys sunshine year-round! The weather can change quickly – a cloud here, a shower there, and then blue skies again. Don’t rely on Polish weather forecasts – they’re often outdated. Pack light clothing, sunglasses, and a thin rain jacket.
The local currency is the Sri Lankan rupee (LKR). It’s best to bring US dollars (USD) – they’re easiest to exchange. Exchanging at the airport is a good idea – the rates are fair. Cards work in hotels, but cash is useful everywhere.
Sri Lanka uses plug types D and G (British style). Bring an adapter and a local SIM card (Dialog, Mobitel) – internet is fast and affordable.
Sri Lankan cuisine is a burst of flavors! Dishes can be spicy, so if you prefer milder food, ask for ‘not spicy’. Try local fruits, hoppers, fish, and king coconuts. Drink only bottled water.
Sri Lanka is a nature paradise – from tea plantations to tropical forests. Respect nature – don’t feed or touch wild animals. Choose ethical elephant sanctuaries. Bring mosquito repellent.
Sri Lankans are warm and friendly. In temples, remove your shoes and head coverings. Don’t pose with your back to Buddha statues. The word that opens every heart is ‘Ayubowan!’ – meaning ‘long life!’
Traffic is left-hand side. Tuk-tuks are cheap and fun, but agree on the price before your ride. For longer trips, choose a recommended driver – it’s safe and air-conditioned.
Sri Lanka tastes best when you slow down. Don’t rush – soak in the colors, scents, and smiles. Be flexible – if a tropical shower comes, stop for a cup of tea. The most beautiful memories are born from spontaneous moments.
- Small tips (about 100 LKR) are appreciated.
- Travel insurance is a must!
- Don’t litter – help preserve the island’s beauty.
- Always carry a smile – it’s the best currency.
- Passport must be valid for at least six months. From October 15, 2025, visas are issued online only.
